Historic Termini

The original western terminus was at U.S. Route 61 in Wyoming, Minnesota. From Chisago City US 8 followed what is now Chisago County Route 22 to Wyoming. In 1931 the highway was extended to into downtown Minneapolis at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Washington Avenue. At the time US 12/52 ran along Washington Avenue and US 65 ran on the other side of 3rd Avenue and also ended at this intersection. In 1978, with ongoing construction and completion of Interstate 35W, US 8 was truncated to the I-35W/New Brighton Blvd interchange. The original eastern terminus was to be in Powers, Michigan at the junction of US 2 and US 41. The route originally was co-signed US 141 north from Pembine, Wisconsin to US 2 between Iron Mountain and Quinnesec, Michigan. It is unclear if it was ever co-signed with US 2 east to Powers.
