The UK Official Download Chart is compiled by The Official UK Charts Company on behalf of the music industry. The chart week runs from Wednesday to Tuesday, with the chart being compiled on a Wednesday afternoon; however, the chart is aired initially on Radio 1's Chart Show every Sunday afternoon from 4–7 PM, along with the Top 20 albums and the UK Top 40 singles. Only the Top 10 downloads are aired on the show. The main chart contains the Top 40 downloads; however, usually only the Top 20 are of main interest. The chart only uses sales of single-download tracks on non-subscription services. Some downloading services offer a monthly fee plan where generally an unlimited amount of tracks can be downloaded within a month for a certain price. Tracks downloaded in these instances do not qualify, as only single-track downloads are eligible for the charts. Previously Chart Information Network (CIN). ...

History

With legal downloads having been on the increase since the new millennium began, the UK Official Charts Company decided to organise the official UK Download Chart. Its inception was on September 1, 2004. In early January 2005, the week before the 1000th #1 single topped the UK Singles Chart, legal downloads took over physical sales for the first time in UK Chart history. This has been the case ever since, with sales throughout early 2005 being very poor and all-time records for lowest sales being set throughout. Therefore, on April 17, 2005, the official UK Singles Chart incorporated legal downloads as well as physical sales in an attempt to boost flagging single sales. The single with the longest stay on the UK Official Download Chart is Crazy by Gnarls Barkley hanging on to the top spot for 9 weeks. September 1 is the 244th day of the year (245th in leap years). ... 2004 (MMIV) was a leap year starting on Thursday of the Gregorian calendar. ... UK Singles Chart - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (4205 words)
The precise number is debatable due to the profusion of different competing charts during the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, although the usual list used is that endorsed by the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles and subsequently adopted by The Official UK Charts Company.
To add to the confusion, the chart used by the BBC on their popular shows Pick of the Pops and Top Of The Pops was actually calculated by averaging out all the others, and so didn't agree with any of them, and was prone to tied positions.
An effect of this competition for high chart positions is that a number of high-profile "battles" have taken place in which singles released on the same day have become the focus of media attention concerning which will sell the most copies in their first week and therefore enter the chart higher.
Guardian | UK logs on to first download chart (578 words)
The creation of a download chart is a shot in the arm to the music industry, which has been battling to preserve the single as a consumer product.
A spokesman for the Official Chart Company said the company wanted the new chart to be as "wide and broad" as possible, and was considering widening the number of services that sales data was taken from.
The launch of the offical download chart is part of a two-year sponsorship deal between OCC and Coca-Cola, which sponsors of the official UK singles and albums charts, broadcast on Radio 1.
