UKTV History shows programmes on historical topics and biographies, as is to be expected, nature and wildlife and some historical fiction (e.g., Sharpe, Tenko), often from the BBC archives. Freeview hours

Until 14 October UKTV History transmitted its full output on Freeview. On 15 October 2007 UKTV Bright Ideas was replaced on Freeview by UKTV's Dave (formerly UKTV G2), transmitting for more hours than UKTV Bright Ideas did; to allow this, UKTV History reduced its Freeview transmissions to end earlier, transmitting from 07:00 to 18:00. This has caused much concern amongst the readers on the UKTV History messageboards since most users are very much against the change and are attempting to get UKTV History to reverse its decision. The reason for this change (as stated by UKTV Sharon in the messageboard) was that UKTV believes that it will get more advertising revenue through Dave than through UKTV History.

UK History was launched on 30th October 2002, to coincide with the launch of the Freeview digital terrestrial television platform.
Along with the rest of the network, the "UK" prefix was changed to "UKTV" on 8th March 2004 and is thus now known as UKTV History.
Unlike the other UKTV channels, UKTV History is not a subscription channel but is free to air on all digital platforms.

UKTV's channels are available via satellite and cable in the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
In the UK, on digital terrestrial television, UKTV History and UKTV BrightIdeas are available on the Freeview platform, and selected parts of UKTV Gold, UKTV Style and UKTV Food are available through Top Up TV.
None of the UKTV channels operates in widescreen — programmes made in widescreen are always horizontally cropped into 14:9 — and factual programmes are almost always cut for commercial timing although dramas and comedies are not.
