Unifon is a phonetic alphabet for English developed by John Malone in the 1950's. It was developed as a pedagogical aid for helping children acquire reading skills, as it creates a much closer connection between the written word and its pronunciation than does standard English spelling. Several new characters were introduced that corresponds to phonemes in English that are written with multiple letters in standard English spelling. UNIFON - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (739 words)
UNIFON is a phonemic alphabet developed by John R. Malone in the early 1950's on a contract from the Bendix Corporation.
Malone entered Unifon in the Shaw alphabet competition but since it ignored the requirement that the new alphabet be non-roman, it was disqualified.
Although Unifon was made available to a number of schools in the early 1960's, it was overshadowed by another initial teaching alphabet, Pitman's Augmented Roman.

Unifon was later found to be useful as a transitory alphabet to help children to learn to read English.
