The 6th Army Group remained subordinate to AFHQ in the Mediterranean Theatre during the invasion and in the weeks immediately afterwards. At about the time the 6th Army met the American 12th Army Group, which had broken out of the Normandy bridgehead, near Dijon in mid-September, command was handed to SHAEF (Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Forces) under U.S. General Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Its area of operation extended from the High Vosges, progressing through Germany and eventually, Western Austria and the Lake of Constance. Soldiers of the U.S. 3rd Infantry Division, which was part of the US Seventh Army, were the first allied troops to arrive at Berchtesgaden which they secured along with the Berghof Hitler's Alpine residence.
The Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA; more commonly referred to as the IRA, the Provos, or by some of its supporters as the army or the 'RA) is an Irish Republican paramilitary organisation dedicated to the end of British rule in Northern Ireland and to a United Ireland.
The IRA split into two groups at its Special Army Convention in December 1969, over the issue of abstentionism (whether to sit in, or "abstain" from the Dail or parliament of the Republic of Ireland) and over the question of how to respond to the escalating violence in Northern Ireland (see The Troubles).
The two groups that emerged from the split became known as the Official IRA (which espoused a Marxist analysis of Irish partition) and the Provisional IRA.
