Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

It was under the command of Captain Rudy Ransom. He was a renowned exo-biologist who had made first contact with the Yridians, a species thought to be extinct by the United Federation of Planets and the Borg Collective. The Equinox, like the USS Voyager, was transported to the Delta Quadrant of the galaxy by an alien entity named the Caretaker in 2371. While returning to the Alpha Quadrant, the crew and ship took heavy damage and casualties in conflicts with aliens. By 2375, the ship was severely damaged and running on thrusters when the Equinox encountered an alien race named the Ankari, who exposed the crew to nucleogenic life-forms made of antimatter. The crew constructed a containment field to harvest these life-forms in an attempt to increase the ship's speed. After encountering the USS Voyager the Equinox crew stole the Voyager's Shield Generator (theirs was permanently damaged) exposing Voyager to the alien attacks, while the Equinox warped out of the sector leaving Voyager behind. Voyager eventually made proper contact with the aliens and worked with them to get back their Shield Generator. The Equinox was shortly thereafter destroyed by others of the same species, who detonated the Equinox's warp core. The surviving Equinox crew members were taken aboard the USS Voyager, stripped of rank for their actions and returned to service as crewmen under heavy supervision. Captain Ransom was killed when his ship was destroyed; he was piloting the Equinox away from Voyager to prevent both ships being destroyed in the resulting explosion.

Spoilers end here.

The ship design first appears in the Star Trek Deep Space Nine Technical Manual as the original pathfinder vessel that eventually became the USS Defiant.[citation needed]

Equinox - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (963 words)
The word "equinox" comes from the Latin for "equal night"; the equinoxes in March and September are the two occasions each year when the day and the night are of equal duration for all locations on Earth.
In the Northern Hemisphere, the March equinox is known as the vernal (spring) equinox and the September equinox is the autumnal (autumn) equinox.
The September equinox usually occurs on September 22 or 23, but may also occur on September 21, which happens next in 2092 CE at 23:41 UT. The time at which the Sun passes through each equinox point can be calculated precisely and the equinox actually occurs at a particular moment.
