The naval battle between the destroyer USSMaddox and several North Vietnamese torpedo boats occurred on August 2, 1964, in the immediate aftermath of a series of 34-A maritime raids on North Vietnamese coastal targets.
There were photographs of the North Vietnamese torpedo boats engaged in a fire-fight with the Maddox, Admiral Thomas H. Moorer retained a dud shell from one of the Vietnamese vessels as a souvenir, and numerous Maddox sailors confirmed sighting at least three torpedoes.
