Three ships of the United States Navy have been named USS San Diego, after the city of San Diego, California.
The first San Diego was originally the armored cruiserCalifornia (ACR-6).
The second San Diego (CL-53) was a light cruiser commissioned in 1942 in service throughout the Pacific War, and decomissioned 1946.
The third San Diego (AFS-6) was a combat store ship in service from 1969 to 1997.
The sixth ship of the new San Antonio class LPD will be named in honor of San Diego.
