Encyclopedia > Ultima Dragons

The Ultima Dragons are a virtual club for the fans of the Ultima series of computer games. Nowadays, they're usually known as Ultima Dragons Internet Chapter, or UDIC.

The club was originally created on the 27th of February, 1992, on Prodigy, then disbanded due to issues relating to the "outrageous rate structure".

The club was then reformed due to the efforts of an ex-Prodigy member of the Ultima Dragons, Ethereal Dragon. Nowadays, the club is based on the Internet (hence it's called the Internet Chapter). There is a website dedicated to the club, including a roster of members. The club members gather in Usenet (particularly in rec.games.computer.ultima.dragons (news:rec.games.computer.ultima.dragons) newsgroup), but large part of the members also gather in various Ultima-related web message boards.

Membership requirements are quite simple - you must have played at least one Ultima game. This includes all "canonical" Ultima games - and after much debate, players of Ultima Online were also accepted to the club. The requirement is not particularly difficult to fulfill anyway, since Ultima IV has been released as freeware.

All members are usually known by their "dragon name", which ends in "Dragon" (for example, "For Example Dragon"). Some also add "UDIC" (or some ASCII art-esque variant, such as "-==(UDIC)==-") to the name for clarity. They sign Ultima newsgroup/message board posts with this name. Frequently, they also use this name on the Ultima-related websites they maintain.
