Ultravisitor is a comprehensive compilation of the many musical styles that Jenkinson visited on his previous albums, but with new, previously unreleased material. From the drum and bass and acid techno sounds of his early releases such as Feed Me Weird Things and Big Loada, to the jazz fusion sounds of Hard Normal Daddy and Music Is Rotted One Note, or the harsh, abrasive sounds of his more recent releases Go Plastic and Do You Know Squarepusher. A few of the tracks feature layered Spanish guitar, or filtered bass guitar. Many of the tracks have the sounds of a crowd cheering during quieter moments in the songs, blurring the line between studio and live recordings (some of the crowd noises may have been recorded during his 2001 tour.) Squarepusher - Ultravisitor : album review (678 words)
That Ultravisitor is a continuation of Tom 'Squarepusher' Jenkinson's dedication to the art of the drum and bass, both in its 'live' and sequenced varieties, should come as no surprise.
Ultravisitor isn't the kind of record to let you just ride on the visceral thrust of its ups, or let you drift on autopilot on its downs.
Though nominally composed of 15 tracks, Ultravisitor can be roughly translated as a triptych, where the second and third movements will provide as uncompromising a discussion of musical ideas as you're likely to hear on one extended set.
SQUAREPUSHER - Ultravisitor (538 words)
The one difference that 'Ultravisitor' demonstrates in comparison to previous works is his love for the bass guitar, and a notable live feel that, despite its vigour, allows his sequenced brutalism more space to breathe than usual.
Although he has already toyed with these elements before, it's more prolonged on 'Ultravisitor', hence, tracks such as 'Andrei' would be equally at home in a blues or jazz club.
Ultravisitor is exactly what it says on the tin, a hyped-up return to the past.
