Pilot
Just as in the first episode of the series, Ulysses celebrates his son Telemachus' birthday in the japanese pilot episode. In 1980, Telecom Animation, TMS Entertainment, and DiC Entertainment produced a pilot for the series, simply titled Ulysses 31.[1] The pilot was released on VHS in Japan along with a couple of episodes by King Records in 1986. The pilot appears to have been only recorded in Japanese. Image File history File links No higher resolution available. ...

The story is virtually identical to episode 1 of the series, however the story is the only thing that was kept. Although all the characters were kept, some underwent major redesign from a typical anime design to the one seen in the finished series, which is a mix of japanese anime style and european art based on the appearance of classical greek sculpture.[1]. Renowned japanese illustrators and animators Shingo Araki and Michi Himeno, who have worked in anime adaptations of famous manga, (Masami Kurumada's Saint Seiya, Riyoko Ikeda's Versailles no Bara, UFO Grendizer OVA, to name a few) were responsible for the finished series character designs, animation routines and visual style.
Yumi and Nono in the japanese pilot episode. Out of all the characters, Telemachus received a major redesign.[1] Nono was kept identical to the anime design of the pilot, without changes. In the series, Noumaïos and Yumi were identical to their design in the pilot, only the color of their clothes was changed from purple and dark blue to lilac, and their hair was slightly longer. Also, in the pilot episode, their boots length was up the knees. In the final series, they became normal length boots. Image File history File links No higher resolution available. ...

Also, most of the animation sequences from the pilot were not used again, although some scenes were reused in the final version of the first episode.

Trivia - The series aired in Japan in 1988 as Space Legend Ulysses 31, but was cancelled after only twelve episodes. NHK later broadcast all 26 episodes on their BS-2 satellite channel.
- When the series was originally dubbed into English, the lengthy opening and ending credits (which remained written in French) featured newly-recorded English-language versions of the show's theme. This version of the series was shown on the BBC in the UK twice. When the series was syndicated in the U.S., the opening and ending credits were shortened, and the French text credits were replaced with newly-generated English-language credits. This version is now the only English version available, and is the one released on the complete DVD boxset in the UK.
- The designs of the various spaceships and other technology seen in the show often borrowed heavily from various science-fiction films of the day. For example, Ulysses's ship took several design cues from spacecraft featured in Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: A Space Odyssey. A very curious example is the leader of the Shark Men in the episode "Rebellion in Lemnos", whose design is clearly inspired by that of George Lucas' Darth Vader, without his helmet, as he appeared in Star Wars Episode VI : Return of the Jedi, but the episode was aired more than a year before the movie was released.
- A number of musical cues from the series were altered but clearly taken from science fiction films, such as Flash Gordon and Star Wars, from where sound effects were also taken.[citation needed]
- Shingo Araki, who was an animator and character designer of the show, with Michi Himeno, also a character designer and illustrator, worked five years later in another series based on Greek Mythology: They adapted the characters and visual style from Masami Kurumada's manga, Saint Seiya, which is based on greek myths, in the anime adaptation of that manga.
- In this show Ulysses used a lightsaber and a round energy shield as weapons. In Marvel comics there was a group called the Pantheon who had a member, Ulysses, with a noticeably similar choice of weapons.
- The series bore a similarity to the anime/manga Captain Harlock. Both protagonists are hounded in their travels by ancient mythological gods: Ulysses by Zeus, and Captain Harlock by Wotan, a Norse god (see Harlock Saga: Great Harlock Gotterdamerung manga). Each is on a quest: Ulysses to free his ship's companions from Zeus' spell, and Harlock to fulfil his prophecy by starting the 'Twilight Of The Gods'. Both men endure hardships, overcoming traps, agents/servants working for the Gods, being forced to journey to far-away places in space, and surviving many dangers created by the vengeful gods out to destroy them on their quest.
- For the first repeat run of the series in France on the FR3 channel in 1983, a short one-and-a-half minute clip featuring Nono called "I Make Noise" was made to commemorate the series' return to the air. The title comes from a French novelty record featuring Nono, which is featured as the background music of the clip.
