Encyclopedia > Underwater swimming

For swimming underwater with swimfins and/or breathing apparatus, see scuba diving or diving activities.'

At the second modern Olympic Games in Paris in 1900, probably the most unusual sport was underwater swimming.

Points were awarded as follows:

  • Two points for every metre swum under water
  • One point for every second the swimmer stayed below the surface

The competition was held over a maximum of 60 m.

The winner was Charles DeVandeville (France), who swam 60 meters in a time of 1 minute and 8.4 seconds (score: 188.4 pts). In second and third places were André Six (France) and Peter Lykkeberg (Denmark).

This was the first and only time underwater swimming was held at the Olympic Games: The sport was not featured at subsequent games because of lack of spectator appeal.

Underwater swimming pool illumination systems - Patent 4053758 (5758 words)
An underwater swimming pool illumination system includes a lighting assembly having a lamp unit installed within its rear portion in a waterproof enclosure; and the lamp is connected to a low voltage battery.
In a normal installation of a swimming pool lighting assembly 10 or 22 according to this invention, the assembly is installed at the swimming pool by being fitted to a pad 16 or 16.1 respectively, which is in turn, secured to the swimming pool deck 18.
The bayonet-like assembly of the base to a pad which is secured to the swimming pool deck assists in overcoming or absorbing the force of a rocking motion which may be imposed upon the lighting assembly due to the wave action of water in the swimming pool.
Computational fluid dynamics ? A tool for future swimming technique analysis (3012 words)
The underwater phase of swimming forms a large component of the total event time in modern swimming and can often lead to the difference between a medal and finishing with the rest of the pack.
To make this model specific to elite swimming performance, it is necessary to apply the movement patterns which are typical of an elite swimmer with a proficient underwater dolphin kicking technique.
Due to the unavailability of empirical testing to accurately measure drag while swimming throughout an underwater kick cycle, the model was calibrated using steady- state tests (passive drag recorded while in a prone streamlined position).
