Union Grove is a village located in Racine County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 4,322.

Union Grove is located at 42°41'7" North, 88°2'58" West (42.685287, -88.049390)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.4 km˛ (1.7 mi˛). 4.4 km˛ (1.7 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,322 people, 1,631 households, and 1,143 families residing in the village. The population density is 975.9/km˛ (2,525.0/mi˛). There are 1,677 housing units at an average density of 378.7/km˛ (979.7/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is 97.20% White, 0.28% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.72% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.42% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races. 2.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,631 households out of which 38.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.0% are married couples living together, 12.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.9% are non-families. 23.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.10.


In the village the population is spread out with 28.6% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 18.6% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 90.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.6 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $50,636, and the median income for a family is $57,453. Males have a median income of $38,239 versus $25,263 for females. The per capita income for the village is $20,445. 5.4% of the population and 4.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.5% of those under the age of 18 and 8.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Union Grove is ideally located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 45 and Wisconsin Highway 11, only five miles west of Interstate 94.
Other early settlers followed and in 1846, a schoolhouse, called the Union School because it brought together several outlying school districts, was built at the junction of present day Highway 11 and Highway 45.
When a post office was needed for the tiny village in 1846, the Union School and the beautiful grove of burr oak trees combined to suggest the name "Union Grove" to then Governor Henry Dodge.

Wisconsin has a proud heritage of serving veterans and their spouses dating back to 1887 with the founding of the Veterans Home at King, Wisconsin.
Planning was initiated in the early 1990's by the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) to develop the state's second veteran's home on the grounds of the Southern Wisconsin Center (SWC) near Union Grove.
The cemetery, one of three state veteran's cemeteries in Wisconsin, is a fitting tribute to the sacrifices and achievements of Wisconsin veterans.
