The organisation has signatories and members from across the political spectrum including MPs from all of Britain’s leading political parties including a number of members of the Labour cabinet. Other notable signatories include Holocaust survivor Henry Gutterman.


The group was formed as part of a coalition between the Anti-Nazi League and the National Assembly Against Racism, the TUC and all leading British Unions such as T&G and UNISON in response to electoral successes by the BNP. However, fascism was not under the direct control of the capitalists and, particularly in Germany, went far beyond defeating the workers’ movement.
The movements in Britain against the National Front in the 1970s and the BNP in the 1990s were also led by the left, trade unionists and community organisations.
Sadly, however, Steve Silver, Nick Lowles and the initiators of UAF do not go on to draw the necessary conclusions from this argument: that to defeat the BNP the workers’ movement must be prepared to challenge them and the parties of the establishment on the electoral field as well as in community campaigning work.
