History
After the demise of the second incarnation of the American Soccer League in 1983, four ASL teams founded the USL. The original plan for the league was to avoid the problems that plagued both the ASL and the North American Soccer League. The USL was to feature primarily American players and fiscal responsibilty as well as orderly expansion.
