As of 2005, the highway's northern terminus is Michigan City, Indiana at U.S. Highway 12. Its southern terminus is St. Albans, West Virginia at U.S. Highway 60. Currently, the West Virginia portion of the highway is being expanded to four lanes, mostly along a completely new route. This grid is the opposite of the Interstate Highways, which increase from west to east and south to north.
The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1921 limited the routes to 7% of each state's roads, while 3/7 had to be "interstate in character".
