United Telekom Austria (short form UTA) is the largest alternative telecommunications provider in Austria. Once belonging to the Raiffeisen bank and the local energy suppliers, it was sold to the Swedish company TELE2 in November 2004.
Austria is uneasily located at the heart of Europe, flanked by Italy and Germany on the one side and by Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovenia on the other.
Austria, Italy, Hungary, Yugoslavia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Macedonia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Romania, Albania, and Moldova.
Austria's financial sector is over-exposed to central, eastern and southeastern Europe in the same way that American banks were exposed to Latin America in the 1980's.
The Austrian PTT (OePTV) is government-owned and, until April 1, 1994, comprised a monopoly in local, trunk, and international competition, data communications, and leased lines, and wireless telephony.
Thus, Austria was, and still is, one of the least deregulated countries in Europe.
However, UnitedTelekomAustria was prohibited to participate in the bidding.
