History

Unity was first populated by Scottish prisoners of war who were captured at the Battle of Dunbar (1650), forced marched to Durham Cathedral (in England), tried for treason for supporting Charles II (rather than Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protectorate) shipped in a vessel called the 'Unity' to the Massachuetts, sold into slavery and who worked at the Saugus Iron Works until they could pay for their freedom. George Gray, of Lanark, Scotland was among 150 prisoners who in endured this, and whose descendents still inhabit Deer Isle and Stonington, Maine.
