The name is a combination of the words "University" and "Olympiad". The Universiade is often referred to in English as the World University Games or World Student Games. The Universiade is an international sporting and cultural festival that is staged every two years in a different city and is second in importance only to the Olympic Games.
The Universiades and Championships are open to all student athletes who have not been out of university or its equivalent for more than a year and that are between 17 and 28 years of age.
Since, like the Universiade, the conference is biennial, FISU hopes to give students and university sport officials the opportunity to meet more often to discuss topics related to education, culture and sport through forum seminars.

The 23rd Summer Universiade to be held Aug. 11-21, 2005 in Izmir, Turkey will feature some 9,000 participants including 8,000 student-athletes from 170 countries competing in the following sports: archery, athletics, basketball, diving, fencing, gymnastics, sailing, soccer, swimming, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling.
