Al sinds haar oprichting in 1961 als Technische Hogeschool Twente, later omgedoopt in Universiteit Twente, is de universiteit een belangrijke factor in het ontstaan van nieuwe economische bloei na de teloorgang van de textielindustrie in dit deel van Nederland.
