University College Cork - National University of Ireland, Cork - or more commonly University College Cork (UCC) - is a constituent university of the National University of Ireland located in Cork City.

The university was founded as a college in the 1840s under the original name of Queen's College, Cork which became University College, Cork under a charter issued after the Irish Universites Act, 1908 became law. The terms of the Universities Act, 1997 were used to rename the university after resolution by the Senate of the National University of Ireland.

Student numbers, currently at over 14,000, have increased greatly since the late 1980s, necessitating the expansion of the campus by the acquisition adjacent buildings and lands. However the Boole Library, named after the first professor of mathematics George Boole, has not expanded in line with the rest of the university, its lack of space and long queues are legendary, so much so that at any relatively short queue, students can be heard to exclaim "CoolaBoola!".

The university has a number of related companies, these include: Cytrea (http://www.cytrea.ie) which is involved in pharmaceutical formulations. Firecomms (http://www.firecomms.com) an ICT company who concentrate on optical communications; Alimentary Health (http://www.alimentaryhealth.ie) a biotechnology and healthcare company; Optical Metrology Innovations (http://www.omi.eu.com) who develope laser metrology systems.

The university was named "Irish University of the Year 2003-2004" [1] (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,8444-815589,00.html) by the Sunday Times, UK, a result disputed by Trinity College[2] (http://www.tcd.ie/).
