University of Detroit Mercy is the largest and most comprehensive Catholic University in Michigan. Its origin dates back to 1877 with the founding of Detroit College by the Society of Jesus and to 1941 with the founding of Mercy College of Detroit by the Sisters of Mercy. In 1990, University of Detroit and Mercy College of Detroit merged to become University of Detroit Mercy. The University offers approximately 100 academic degrees and programs of study, including liberal arts, business, dentistry, law, engineering, architecture, nursing and health professions. UDM is ranked in the top tier of Midwestern master's universities in U.S.News & World Report's "America's Best Colleges" 2007 edition. Athletically, the University sponsors 16 NCAA Division I level varsity sports for men and women, and is a member of the Horizon League.
