The University was founded on its own site on the 17th of November 1948, although the first students had begun courses in January of that year. Arthur Creech Jones, then Secretary of State for the Colonies, inaugurated the new educational institution. The University was originally instituted as an independent external college of the University of London. SOme of the original buildings were designed by the English modernist architects Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew. A 500-bed teaching hospital was added in 1957. In late 1963, on the University playing fields, with the celebration marked by talking drums, the Rt. Hon. Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, first Prime Minister of independent Nigeria, became the first Chancellor of its independent University. For other kinds of drums, see drum (disambiguation). ... Besides the College of Medicine, there are now ten other faculties: Arts, Science, Agriculture and Forestry, the Social Sciences, Education, Veterinary Medicine, Technology, Law, Public Health, and Dentistry.


The University has residential and sports facilities for Staff and Students on Campus, as well as a Botanical and a separate Zoological Garden.


University of Ibadan, (UI as it is fondly referred to) boasts of several eminent scholars worldwide including nobel prize award winner, Wole Soyinka, and it remains a major pioneer in the development of research south of the Sahara.

University education generates positive externalities to other people than the graduates; such as crime reduction, increase in social cohesion, technological innovations, fertility reduction, increase in standard of health, improved nutrition and intergenerational benefits which refer to the benefits parents derive from their university education and pass on to their children (Psacharopoulos and Woodhall, 1985: 53).
It cannot be said however, that the university has not provided a master plan for the development of its land as Babcock has, but that the master plan is yet to be translated in terms of adequate occupation of the land areas to prevent trespassers from encroaching on the land.
The public universities stand to gain from such an innovation, which is a common feature of overseas universities.  Deploying students to management positions as assistants at halls of residence and as class managers goes a long way in instilling in them the culture of gentlemanliness, tolerance and socialization.
Choosing an Internet Service Provider (1635 words)
The University of Ibadan, in the position of truly needing the bandwidth, and the IITA, which could feel "put upon" to assist Ibadan, would be on unequal footing in such disputes.
Ibadan pays good money for this Internet connection, and as the customer might be expected to have more of an equal relationship with the provider in terms of settling disputes.
Speaking of which, in its ongoing plans the university needs to consider that the satellite dish and the power protection equipment will need to be maintained which may call for several people to be trained to provide 24-hour support for the system.
