The Catholic University of Leuven, founded in 1425, is now the names of two Belgian universities, after the original university split in 1968:

The Catholic University of Leuven is one of the oldest European universities.
Upon request of Duke of Brabant John V and the city of Leuven, Pope Martin V (1417-1431) signed on 9 December 1425 the bull enacting the foundation of the University of Leuven.
The University was closed during the French occupation (1797) and reopened by the Bishop of Leuven in 1834, after the independence of Belgium (1830).

The university had to pass through a trial period before it could open a theological faculty, which it received after 5 years (despite Rome and Paris trying to preserve that right for themselves).
The Leuven University is considered to be the oldest catholic university in the world.
