History

The University of Texas at Brownsville was established in 1989, and admitted its first class in 1991. The University of Texas at Brownsville is located in Brownsville, Texas. The University of Texas at Brownsville works in concert with Texas Southmost College. Both entities are currently lead by UTB/TSC president Dr. Juliet V. Garcia and occupy the same landspace. The University and the College parts of the institution are designed so that a student can achieve various levels of certification and/or degrees without having to enroll a two separate institutions but can proceed from survey courses to degree courses seamlessly. The University boasted enrollment of 11,000 students as of Spring 2004. The University is located on the land once occupied by Fort Brown.
