Encyclopedia > University preparatory school

A university-preparatory school or college-preparatory school (usually shortened to preparatory school, college prep school, or prep school) is a private secondary school (or high school) designed to prepare a student for higher education. (In the United Kingdom the term preparatory school has a different meaning, as they are designed to prepare students under thirteen for prestigious fee-paying Public Schools). Secondary education is a period of education which, in most contemporary educational systems of the world, follows directly after primary education, and which may be followed by tertiary, post-secondary, or higher education (e. ... A preparatory school, or prep. ... A public school, in current English, Welsh and Northern Ireland usage, is a (usually) prestigious independent school, for children usually between the ages of 11 or 13 and 18, which charges fees and is not financed by the state. ...

There are many types of prep schools. While some have facilities in which students live (i.e., boarding schools), most are day schools. Often, prep schools are highly selective, academically challenging, and largely independent of state and local controls. Such schools are usually expensive, with high tuition used to pay excellent teachers and provide enriched learning environments. These schools often, however, have significant endowments which allow for scholarships that allow demographic heterogeneity. Many of these schools place a strong emphasis on sports (in America, see the Independent School Leagues or Southwest Preparatory Conference). In the United States, preparatory education is also often associated with the preppy subculture. A boarding school is a school where some or all students not only study but also live, amongst their peers but away from their home and family. ... Tuition means instruction, teaching or a fee charged for educational instruction especially at a formal institution of learning. ... Endowment refers to the innate capacities of an individual, group, or institution. ... There are several expansions of the abbreviation ISL: Formally, ISL can refer to International Sign Language, aka Gestuno. ... Preppy is a chiefly American adjective traditionally used to describe the characteristics of White, Anglo-Saxon, patrician Protestants (usually with some personal or familial connection to New England, even if only historic) who attend or attended major private, secondary university-preparatory schools. ...

Other prep schools are not as academically oriented and, while they might boast of low student-to-teacher ratios and a beautiful campus, their student bodies are about as academic as neighboring public schools. Other prep schools specialize in students with learning disabilities and behavior problems, while still others focus on a religious subset of the population (e.g., Jews, Christians). These latter schools often lack significant financial backing, leading to limited extracurricular activities and financial aid. The term learning disability is used to refer to socio-biological conditions that affect a persons communicative capacities and potential to learn. ... The neutrality of this article is disputed. ...

The elite prep schools frequently have the resources to pay top salaries and to offer excellent working conditions. They tend to boast of a high percentage of teachers with graduate degrees and long tenures. This article is about academic degrees. ... Tenure commonly refers to academic tenure systems, in which professors (at the university level)—and in some jurisdictions schoolteachers (at primary or secondary school levels)—are granted the right not to be fired without cause after an initial probationary period. ...

In France, some high schools offer special postgraduate classes called classes préparatoires, equivalent in level to the first years of university, for students who wish to prepare for the competitive exams for the entrance in the Grandes écoles. French classes préparatoires are exceptionally intensive and selective, taking only the very best students graduating from high schools but the tuition fees are generally non-existent. The Classes Préparatoires aux Grandes Écoles (nicknames : Classes prépas or simply prépa) are highly selective French undergraduate studies which prepare students to the Grandes Écoles. ... A university is an institution of higher education and of research, which grants academic degrees at all levels (bachelor, master, and doctor) in a variety of subjects. ... The grandes écoles (French: great schools) of France are higher education establishments outside the mainstream framework of the public universities. ...
