Alicia Keys - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (2367 words)
Keys was born Alicia Augello Cook to a Scottish-Italian mother, Terri Augello, and a Jamaican father[1][2], Craig Cook, in Manhattan, New York, and was raised in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of New York City.
Keys' mother and father separated during her early childhood, thus she was raised by her mother during her formative years; her mother was the one who most supported her during the time she was developing her musical talents.
Keys then released her debut album Songs in A Minor in 2001, the title being a reference to both her classical aspirations and to the fact that she wrote most of the songs at a very young age.
Artsandentertainment: Alicia Keys: 'Unplugged' and unrivaled (683 words)
On Keys' two previous albums, 2001 debut Songs in A Minor and 2003's The Diary of Alicia Keys, the singer-songwriter augmented her pristine voice and classically trained ivory work with thumping beats and hip-hop flair.
Keys' Grammy-winning albums have proved hot sellers with a far-ranging demographic, and she's fortified her crowd-pleasing rep with improvisational concerts in which she channels the spirits of Billie Holiday, Beethoven and Beyonce.
Keys is aware of those who came before her, but you better believe she also knows where she stands among her contemporaries.
