In Polynesian mythology (specifically Samoan), Upolu is the first woman on the island of the same name.


The island is 1,125 sq km and is the most populated of the islands. Faleolo International airport is to the west of the island and the capital Apia is to the north.

Surfing on the north coast of Upolu involves even more challenging logistics than surfing on the south coast, and since the prevailing winds at this time of year are also north, it makes surfing missions to the north coast far from a sure bet.
