The Uptown Houston district boomed along with Houston during the 1970s and early 1980s. A collection of mid-rise office buildings appeared along the Interstate 610 west (or as it is referred to by locals, "the West Loop"). The area has became one of the premiere examples of an edge city. In December of 1982 construction was completed on the 909-foot tall, Philip Johnson designed landmark Williams Tower (known as the Transco Tower until 1999). With 64 floors it was considered the world's tallest skyscraper outside of a central business district. The Williams Tower is a fine example of how energy companies, that in the early 1980's were flush with cash, used it to get developers to build impressive, monumental structures to broadcast Houston as the undisputed energy capitol of the world.
