Black gospel is primarily a marketing term used to help potential buyers distinguish it from other forms of Christian music, such as contemporary Christian music or Christian rock and Southern gospel (a merger of barbershop quartet style harmony and country instrumentation, see also Southern Gospel Music Association), which have similar lyrical form but very different musical styling. 'Black' gospel is intended to be descriptive rather than pejorative, since the majority of its performers are African-American, although at times it may appear to have a racist tinge in cases where performers who are of other races (Jon Gibson is one example) may not be labelled black gospel though his music has more in common stylistically with someone like Tramaine Hawkins than Michael W. The term urban contemporary was coined by the late New York DJ Frankie Crocker in the mid 1970s.
Upon occasion, an urban contemporary station will play classic soul music songs from the 1970s and early 1980s to satisfy the older end of the format, but their playlists are otherwise focused on music released within the last five years.
Urban contemporary stations are the main focus of the airplay statistics for the Billboard magazine Hot RandB/Hip-Hop Singles and Tracks chart, which calculates the most popular RandB and hip-hop singles in the United States.
Urban Music Connection will be held during GMA Music Week (April 1-4), GMAâs annual gathering of more than 3,000 artists, musicians, songwriters, executives, media and others working or involved in the gospel music industry.
