Oruzgan (or Uruzgan) is one of the thirty-four provinces of Afghanistan. It is in the centre of the country. Its capital is Tarin Kowt. According to a NATO proposal, a Dutch peacekeeping force will be send to Uruzgan later in 2006, but the Dutch parliament has to ratify it.
The province is governed by Jan Mohammed, a warlord ally of US forces there. He has recently survived several attempts on his life, as Taliban/insurgent activity has increased there in mid 2005.
Uruzgan nestles in a pristine valley ringed by snow-capped peaks that form a natural fortress in the mountains north of Kandahar.
