Encyclopedia > Utah's Dixie

Dixie is the nickname for southwestern Utah. It was named this because early Mormon settlers could grow cotton in the warm climate, reminiscent of Dixie in the southeastern United States; however, unlike its larger namesake, irrigation is necessary for the success of agriculture in Utah's Dixie, due to its aridity. The main city in the area is St. George. The region, which lies in Washington County, is becoming a retirement and recreational haven due to its pleasant winter climate. Temperatures do not dip very far below freezing for long periods of time, the humidity is extremely low (usually below 25% in the summer), and it receives very little precipitation. Summer temperatures average over 100°F (38°C) and are the hottest in the state. The record high temperature is 117°F (47°C). Dixie is one of the fastest-growing regions in the state, being located on the edge of the Sunbelt. Ivins, St. George, Santa Clara, Washington, and Hurricane are the largest and fastest-growing cities within the region.
