Encyclopedia > Utgardaloki

In Norse mythology, Utgardaloki was the ruler of the city Utgard in Jotunheim. He was one of the giants.

Utgard-Loki was one of the sharpest of the giants, a master of magic and illusion. He managed to trick mighty Thor, son of Odin, in taking part in a series of tests of his force. The tests were all rigged but Utgard-Loki's magic was so great that the god of thunder could not see that it was impossible for him to win.

Alternative: Utgart-Loki

He manages to convince Iórr to leave his weapons at home, but on their way he is supplied with a belt of power, a pair of iron gloves and a power staff by a giantess named Grid.
This is of significance when we read the myth of Iórr´s journey to Utgardaloki, where he is accompanied with Ialvi as well, as there has been some discussion about the thunder god´s servant as a common motif where both Loki and Ialvi fit in.
Smoked Fish in Fill-dyke (5230 words)
Utgardaloki clapped his hands again and the giant folk parted to reveal a long stretch of the inner enclosure.
Utgardaloki clapped his hands and the servants ran forward with a massive drinking horn filled with ale.
In the original it is Utgardaloki himself who reveals the magical trickery when the gods leave his hall, after which his hall vanishes so Thor is unable to take his revenge.
