V1 extends rostrally almost to the lunate sulcus and posterolaterally almost to the inferior occipital sulcus; the V1/V2 border is met before either sulci.
The three basic organizing principles of primate V1 are the (1) laminar and (2) columnar arrangement of excitatory and inhibitory neurons (an arrangement shared with other neocortical areas) and (3) the regular spacing of anatomical/functional compartments revealed by cytochrome oxidase (CO) labeling.
Thus, a functional separation in response timing exists in the M and P pathways of the subcortex and V1 and appears to be conveyed to the dorsal and ventral streams of the extrastriate cortex.
