In the digital VSB transmission system described here, there is a flexibility of transmitting any one of five different digital VSB modes (2, 4, 8, 8-trellis, and 16), with the data rate dependent upon the number of discrete levels and whether trellis coding is used.
The VSB data constellation is also affected by the rejection filter (8 input levels mapped to 15 output levels), but is compensated for by transmitter pre-coding and receiver post-coding (trellis) processing.
In the VSB system, clock recovery is determined from the segment syncs, and the framing code location is reliably known from the framing code detector.
