The VW Polo is a compact car manufactured by Volkswagen, sold mainly in Europe. It is generally available only as a hatchback but there have also been sedan and wagon variants. The current sedan is only available in China, South America and South Africa, where sedans are more popular. The first generation's sedan version was called VW Derby or VW Polo Classic. Mk I

The Mk I Polo was an Audi design. The Audi 50 was introduced in 1974, the cheaper (and much more basic) Polo in 1975. It was manufactured at the VW plant in Wolfsburg and sold as both the Polo and as the Audi 50. In 1977 the Derby was released: A Polo with a big boot attached (which was an old Audi design, but was never sold as an Audi). The MK I Polo and Derby were facelifted in 1979, (MK IF) where it got plastic bumpers, a different front grille and a newer dashboard. The Audi 50 production stopped at the same point. Mk II

A revised model version (MK II)was introduced in October 1981, with the major change being the introduction of a station wagon body (curiously referred to by VW as a hatchback), whilst the version that actually looked like a hatchback was called a coupé. The Polo with a 'boot' was no longer called the Derby in all countries, but changed to the Polo Classic. This car was available with either 1043 cc, 1093 cc or 1272 cc engines. Production was expanded (not switched) to Spain in the late 1980s (1987'ish) following VW's takeover of SEAT. In this same year, the Polo got a 'underbody' facelift; in some markets the 1.3 was available with fuel injection and equipped with a catalytic converter as standard (first small car in the world to get such technology as standard). The supercharger-equipped G40 version was introduced in 1987. First as a limited batch of about 2000 cars (as a homologation version for the G40 CUP), later as a normal production version (but all as GT-G40). In 1983 there was also a variant called the C Formal E (C, CL and GL being the standard trim levels). The E stood for Economy and utilised an early stop-start ignition system that would cut the engine when idle for more than 2 seconds. It would be re-activated instantly by moving the gear lever to the left in neutral. This would save fuel in heavy traffic and level crossings etc. There was a toggle switch labelled 'SSA' underneath the light switch to enable the system. The C Formal E used the 1272 cc engine and a larger than standard Bosche alternator. A similar system was later used on the MKIII VW Golf and similar systems are now in use by other car manufacturers. 1981 is a common year starting on Thursday of the Gregorian calendar. ... Mk II Face-lift

A facelift in 1990 (MK IIF) saw square headlights, bigger bumpers and a new interiour (dash and door trim). All models were fuel injected, and all models came with a catalytic converter as standard. The supercharger-equipped G40 version was also available in series production, and sold quite a few. In 1990, the production expanded to Poland (near Wartburg production facilities), but stopped again in 1992: Eastern Europe wanted a Golf, not Polo. The version featuring a boot or trunk was only produced in Spain, and ceased production in 1992. At this point the Polo was now terminally dated: The follow-up, the '6N' version was developed, but due to the high sales number, and the other models (Hatchback and Coupe) where continued to 1994 in Wolfsburg and Spain. Volkswagen used the extra 2 years to re-study the '6n' and change the format a bit before introduction in 1994.
