In the southern most tip of south India, a holy place named Swamithoppe (then part of Tamaraikulam village) in Kanyakumari District,is the birth place of Muthukutty (Sampooranathevan).He was born in 1809 to very poor parents Ponnu Nadar and Veiyelel.They initially named him Mudisoodum Perumal,meaning Lord Vishnu with a crown.But due to objections from high caste people,the family changed his name to Muthukutty. Muthukutty was a religiouse minded boy,and had evinced special intrest in choosing to worship Lord Vishnu.Akilattirattu Ammanai,the religious book of Ayyavazhi mentions that he had set a pedestal for Lord Vishnu in his house and worshipped the deity devoutly. Muthukutty earned his living as a Palmyra climber and as an agricultural labourer. The Transformation
In his Twenty second year, Muthukutty was struck by a severe illness that inflicted acute pain and suffering for a year.On the advice of his mother, who told that she had received an instruction in her dreams to bring her diseased son to the temple at Thiruchendur during the festival to fall on the ninenteenth day of the month of Masi, in the year 1008 of Malayalam era(1833 AD),Muthukutty was brought to Thiruchencur in a cradle, carried by the kith and kin of the family. In Thiruchendur an important event took place. Muthukutty went in to the sea and disappeared. Waiting for upto a day time, all others who went with him except his mother Veilal returned to Tamaraikulam. Veilal alone stayed weeping at the sea-shore. On the Third day after the transformation Lord Vaikundar appeared on the sea-shore.(For more details about the transformation see Vinchai). On seeing him, mistook to be her son she try to embrace him. But he told that he was no more her son, but son of Narayana, and took some sea water(Katal Patham) in his hand and ask her to drink. She refused and was shocked to hear this, and fell down and died. Then as per the instructions of Lord Narayana inside the sea he started walking towards Detchanam. The place where Ayya Vaikundar performed the Avataram was a holy place for the devotees of Ayyavazhi and they erected a temple there named Avatharappathi at Thiruchendur. Lord Vaikundar is an alternative name given to Ayya Vaikundar in Ayyavazhi mythology. ...
