The Vale of York is the area surrounding the city of York, in the north of England. It consists of flat, arable land and is surrounded by terminal moraines - ridges of small hills. The River Ouse and a number of its tributaries run through it.
To the north and east of the ancient walled City of York the North York Moors cover a broad area stretching from the Vale of York and the Vale of Mowbray across to the Yorkshire Coast.
Running along the western and northern edges of the North York Moors are the Hambleton Hills and the Cleveland Hills respectively, while to the east is the Yorkshire Coast, and the popular seaside resorts of Whitby, Scarborough and Filey.
To the south of the North York Moors lies the Vale of Pickering, and the gentler hills and valleys of the Yorkshire Wolds.
