Harper was born in Suffern at Good Samaritan Hospital in Rockland County, New York, to a mixed Catholic/Lutheran family, and raised in Oregon. Because of her role on the The Mary Tyler Moore Show, however, it is often assumed she is Jewish and was raised in New York City.
