Rupert Vance Hartke (May 31, 1919July 27, 2003) was a Democratic U.S. Senator from Indiana from 1959 to 1977.


Hartke was famous for his opposition to the Vietnam War.

Rupert Vance Hartke (May 31, 1919 – July 27, 2003) was a Democratic U.S. Senator from Indiana from 1959 to 1977.
In the Senate, Hartke was known for his opposition to the Vietnam War and his chairmanship of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee.
Hartke died in Falls Church, Virginia on July 27, 2003 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Rupert Vance Hartke was born in the Indiana town of Stendal on May 31, 1919, and graduated in 1940 from Evansville College.
Hartke had seven children, 16 grandchildren, and one great-grandson, and another of his core beliefs was in the importance of keeping his family together, Jan Hartke said.
