Vasily Alekseyevich Degtyarev (Russian: Васи́лий Алексе́евич Дегтярёв; January 2, 1880, TulaJanuary 16, 1949, Moscow) was a Russian weapons designer, Major General of the Engineering and Artillery Service, Doctor of Technical Sciences (1940), and Hero of Socialist Labor (1940, he received the second such award in the history just two weeks later than Joseph Stalin himself). It took its name from the weapons designers Vasily Degtyarev, who designed the original weapon, and Georgi Shpagin, who improved the feed mechanism.
The first gun the Degtyarev, Krupnocalibernyj (DK, Degtyarev, Large calibre) was built in 1930 and this gun was produced in small quantities from 1933 to 1935.
Although it fired a heavy bullet, the gun was fed from a drum magazine of only 30 rounds, leading to an overall poor rate of fire.
