Vatted Malt is a whisky which is blended from a number of different single malts from different distilleries. Unlike a blended whisky, vatted malts do not contain any grain whisky. Whisky, or whiskey, refers to a broad category of alcoholic beverages that are distilled from fermented grain mash and aged in wooden casks (generally oak). ... The term "vatting" is used to describe the blending process—and does not automatically equate to a vatted malt.


Vatted malts or pure malts are to be reclassified as blended malts as part of a process to standardise Scotch whisky descriptors set out by The Scotch Whisky Association, which represents the majority of Scotch whisky distillers in the industry.
