The Verbenaceae or Verbena family has been considered to be closely related to the Lamiaceae (Labiatae), and the border between the two families has long been unclear but characters tying these two families together are apparently convergent. Recent phylogenetic studies have shown several genera to be misplaced in Verbenaceae and these genera are being moved out of Verbenaceae into Lamiaceae. Avicennia, sometimes placed in Verbenaceae or in its own family, Avicenniaceae, has been placed in Acanthaceae. Verbenaceae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (165 words)
In its wider circumscription, Verbenaceae is a family of mainly tropical plants notable for heads, spikes, or clusters of small flowers.
Lamiales (10813 words)
Verbenaceae are shrubs or trees that may be recognised easily because the plants are often aromatic, the opposite leaves are serrate, the stem is often angled and with a line across the node, and the monosymmetric flowers are borne in racemes or heads.
Verbenaceae as currently circumscribed (see esp. Cantino 1992a, b) are much reduced compared to a decade or so ago, and many genera have been placed in Lamiaceae.
There may be differences in seed coat anatomy: the testa of at least some Verbenaceae has the hypodermal layer(s) thickened, while in Labiatae it is the exotestal cells that are thickened, particularly on their inner periclinal and anticlinal walls (Rohwer 1994a).
