The newspaper was started by members of the resistance movement shortly after the country was liberated from German occupation in 1945. The first issue was published June 23, 1945. The newspaper has no party affiliation. VG is today owned by the media conglomerate Schibsted that also owns Aftenposten in addition to shares in most of the larger Norwegian regional papers.
