The Vermilion River flows from Mud Lake in the town of Bailey Lakes in Ashland County and follows a generally northward course through Huron, Erie and Lorain Counties, past the towns of Savannah and Wakeman. Vermilion is a city located in Erie and Lorain counties in Ohio.
It was initially settled in the early 19th century (the oldest permanent structure dates to 1811 -- it is still a private residence), and formed as a village in 1834.
In 1847 the Congress of the United States built the Vermilion Lighthouse as an aide to navigation on Lake Erie.
