Rev.Dr.P.Victor Premasagar was an acknowledged authority on Old Testament - a subject that he taught at the Andhra Christian Theological College - ACTC (an ecumenical seminary), Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, South India. He was well versed in Hebrew, Greek, Latin and Sanskrit apart from Telugu and English besides German. He was also a member of the Society for Biblical Studies - incorporating Biblical Scholars belonging to the Catholic and Protestant traditions. Note: Judaism commonly uses the term Tanakh, but not Old Testament, because it does not recognize the concept of a New Testament. ... His early days

He was born in Dudgaon near Wadi Junction and grew up in the Church tradition. He belonged to the Diocese of Medak of the Church of South India. He was a brilliant academician. He completed his B.A. from the century-old Andhra Christian College, Guntur. Besides education, he also excelled in sports.


The call

The call was evident when he chose the pastoral vocation.


Divinity

He studied in the United Theological College in Bangalore and took his Bachelor of Divinity. Pastor

His Church - the Church of South India posted him to a rural congregation which he ministered with missionary zeal.


Cambridge tripos

He was sent to Cambridge University where he studied Old Testament and was awarded the Cambridge tripos. He taught Old Testament in ACTC which was originally in Luthergiri opposite Andhra Pradesh Paper Mills in Rajahmundry before it was relocated to Hyderabad.


Bible Translator

He was a Translator to the Bible Society of India in its Telugu Common Language programme since the 1970s.


Research

He was sent to St.Andrews University, Scotland for further studies in Old Testament and was awarded Ph.D.


Back at ACTC

He returned to ACTC and was the first Indian Principal.


Visiting Professor

On invitation from Wartburg Theological Seminary [[1]], Dubuque, Iowa, in the United States of America, he took sabbatical from ACTC to teach there for a year. Wartburg Theological Seminary is a Lutheran (ELCA) seminary located in Dubuque, Iowa. ...


Bishopric

After returning to ACTC, he was elected as the General Secretary of the Synod of his Church. Later he was elected as the Bishop of his diocese and still later as the Moderator of all the dioceses of his Church that extended throughout South India besides Jaffna in Sri Lanka. Bible Society of India

He was the President of the Bible Society of India headquartered in Bangalore for a long period where he displayed his administrative skills.


Retirement

After retirement he used to teach part-time in ACTC. He was later invited by Gurukul Theological College, Chennai to teach and was Professor Emeritus of Old Testament.


Back to Andhra

Later, he was invited by Rev.P.N.S.Bose, the present Andhra Pradesh Auxiliary President of the Bible Society of India and also the Director of Bethel Bible College, Guntur to take up its Principalship. Rev.Premasagar took the invitation and taught the rural students with missionary zeal until he breathed his last there[[2]].


Serampore connection

He was a member of the Senate of Serampore College [University] having affiliated seminaries throughout India. He was also its President at one time. Serampore College was founded in 1818 by English missionaries William Carey, Joshua Marshman, and William Ward to give an education in Arts and Science to students of every caste, colour or country and to train a ministry for the growing Church in India. ...
