HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother

HRH The Prince of Wales, HRH The Duke of York, HRH The Earl of Wessex and Viscount Linley took guard at 5.40pm on April 8th 2002 at the lying-in-state of their grandmother, HM Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother in April 2002. Unlike the previous occasion, this was done while people continued to file past the catafalque. The four relieved the guard of the Royal Company of Archers, and were themselves relieved by the Yeomen of the Guard after their twenty minute vigil. Both the Prince of Wales and Duke of York wore naval uniform, while the Earl of Wessex and Viscount Linley, neither having served in the forces, wore morning dress. Prince Charles and Prince Andrew, dressed in naval uniform, stood at western corners of her flag-draped coffin under the mediaeval oak arches of Westminster Hall, while Prince Edward and Lord Linley - Princess Margaret's son - stood at the eastern corners in fl tail coats.
The two young princes, dressed in morning suits, and Princess Anne were joined by Commodore Timothy Laurence, the Princess's husband, and Peter Phillips, her son.
Prince Charles offered a brief smile and a wave, while Prince Andrew saluted the waiting members of the public as he was driven away.

Princes Charles, Andrew and Edward and Viscount Linley, the son of Princess Margaret, took their places at the four corners of the two-metre high catafalque in the ancient hall for 20 minutes, watched by Princess Anne and other junior members of the royal family, as members of the public filed past.
The princes' gesture was a reminder of a vigil in the same hall in January 1936 by the four sons of King George V after his death, though on that occasion it was out of public sight.
This vigil too had been scheduled for when the hall was closed but the press of the public was too great.
