Vikhroli is a suburb of Mumbai. It is also the name of a railway station on the Mumbai suburban railway on the Central Railway line. The station was built just before India's independence in 1947 to take care of transport for the sprawling Godrej Complex in the vicinity. It is the only suburb without a theatre, though people can frequent nearby Huma theatre in Kanjurmarg easily. The suburb once had large open areas owned by Godrej Company, where even children of non-employees were allowed to play games especially cricket. Kannamwar Nagar in the East is known for buildings built by MHADA for the low-income group. The current Mumbai mayor, Datta Dalvi, represents this area in BMC. For years, the vikhroli telephone exchange covered the vast area network from Ghatkopar to Thane. There is a upcomming demand for a new bridge over the Thane creek from Kannamwar Nagar off eastern express highway and to connect Kopar Khairane in Navi Mumbai thereby establishing a much desired third bridge linking Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
