The island of Vilsandi, Estonia is located in the Baltic Sea. It covers an area of some 9 square kilometres, and is the westernmost populated island in Estonia. The Baltic Sea is located in Northern Europe, bounded by the Scandinavian Peninsula, the mainland of Eastern Europe and Central Europe, and the Danish islands. ...
Much of the island is now covered by the Vilsandi National Park, which grew from a bird reserve founded in 1910.
During World War II Vilsandi and its bird sanctuaries were completely destroyed, as was the group of birds that Artur Toom had used for his studies thruout the years.
Therefore, the rebirth of Vilsandi is dated to 7 June 1957, when the bird sactuary was reestablished to cover an area of over 180 square miles.
