Encyclopedia > Vinyl Emulation Software

Vinyl emulation software allows the user to physically manipulate the playback of digital music files on a computer using the mouse or other controllers as if they were being manipulated on an ordinary turntable. This physical manipulation may include scratches, tempo changes, as well as numerous other turntablist maneuvers. In general, most vinyl emulation software setups require a time coded record(s), turntable(s), audio input/output device, computer, and audio mixer. Scratching is a DJ or turntablist technique originated by Grand Wizard Theodore, an early hip hop DJ from New York (AMG). ... Beatmatching is a technique employed by DJs to transition between two songs while performing either live at a club or event, for radio broadcast or for distribution on prerecorded mix tapes/cds, achieved by changing the tempo of a new track to match that of the currently playing track, then... Turntablism is the art of manipulating sounds and creating music using phonograph turntables and an audio mixer. ...

The time coded records output an audible control signal through the turntable and into a connected audio input/output device. The input/output device may be a multi-channel ASIO soundcard or a dedicated external USB or firewire audio interface box. The input/output device communicates the time code information to the software where the information in the signal is translated into corresponding changes in the playback of a digital audio file. The manipulated audio output of the program is then sent back through the input/output device and into an audio mixer where the audio signal can be mixed like any other analog audio signal.

The most popular vinyl emulation software packages include Serato Scratch Live, Stanton Final Scratch, Torq by M-Audio, Ms Pinky, djDecks, VirtualDJ, Digiscratch, PCDJ Scratch, MixVibes DVS and Digital-Scratch. A DJ technology produced by Rane that allows the user to play mp3s from his or her computer using vinyl or CDs as a controller. ... Final Scratch is a DJ tool created by the Dutch company N2IT with input from Richie Hawtin (aka Plastikman) and John Acquaviva that allows manipulation and playback of digital audio sources using traditional vinyl and turntables. ...

FL Studio comes with a "Fruity Scratcher" VST plugin that is intended only for use inside FL Studio. FL Studio (formerly Fruity Loops) is a digital audio workstation, programmed by Didier Dambrin (also known as Gol), the creator of Image-Line Software. ...
